This was the traditional way in order to keep the kimono in perfect, neat shape. On this background are woven various popular Japanese garden and flower cart motifs in lustrous, pale, turquoise blue threads. The colour is a little more turquoise and much prettier than some of the photos suggest. A few of the flowers are outlined in black thread to give a little contrast. There are many typical Japanese garden, flowers and plants. There are small thatched bamboo pavilions and bamboo fencing.
There are small prows of boats on water. The flowers include, water iris, plum blossom, chrysanthemums, tree peonies, wisteria, cherry blossom, bamboo, pine, water iris with cloud shapes surrounding. Some of the flowers are arranged on a little wheeled cart and this is a traditional Japanese decorative motif called hanaguruma. It is a very beautiful and typically Japanese design!I truly hope you can see how lovely the design is on the photos. The lining is fine red, raw silk in the body and sleeve. The skirt and cuff is lined with fine, deep pink-purple, crepe silk. This kind of lining is characteristic of the 1940s. The red lining to the sleeve, gives a flash of red at the inner sleeve opening, then the kimono is worn which is very attractive. This type of kimono with an all over repeated pattern is called komon. It is a type of kimono that is not too formal. However, a kimono with lustrous woven silk like this would still be for quite smart occasion wear. Please note this item does not come with a belt - although any sash or ribbon can be used to tie it.
Authentic Japanese kimonos do not have belts but instead are worn with an obi. Real Japanese kimonos are long and are designed to be pulled up at the waist to get the correct length. This kimono could be worn or displayed. It is in truly excellent / near mint vintage condition for its age with no significant faults to note. There are a couple of very minor and tiny tears in the lining. It was slightly musty but this has now aired out. It is a vintage kimono of some age, so please do not expect it to look exactly like new. SIZE: This kimono is shorter in length than contemporary kimono and a typical size for its era.
This makes it a more easily wearable length than contemporary kimono which are very long indeed. Sleeve edge to sleeve edge width is 126m/49.5", overall length is 142cm/56, and the width across the back (side seam to side seam) is 60.5cm/23.75". The fine quality of the silk is reflected in the fairly light weight of 650g. The weight is reflected in the postal costs. WHY CAN SOME WOMEN'S KIMONO BE SO LONG?
Contemporary and formal kimono are very long indeed. This is because they are traditionally shortened by hitching up at the waist and hiding the excess fabric behind the wide obi belt. (I can send instructions on how to do this if you want them). If you want to shorten a long yukata for ease of use then of course it can be hemmed up in the normal way. If the yukata is very long, then the excess material from the hem can be used to make a simple matching tie belt.If you are handy with sewing, then you might like to try this. If you need any more information or pictures just send me a message. All information is to the best of my knowledge. Please bear in mind, that colours do not always show absolutely accurately on photos and on monitors although they should be close to reality. Please be aware that vintage clothing does not usually'look like new' even when it is in excellent condition.
Some slight general signs of ageing and use should be expected. If these are conspicuous they will be mentioned in the description.
Sorry about this but it is based on previous experience of problems. So I have had to pass this new cost on via the postal cost.
